DeafBlind History, People, and Language

This training will cover DeafBlind history, people, and language. Participants will learn about Seattle and Lighthouse’s role in evolution of DeafBlind community. We will discuss protactile, an emerging language of DeafBlind, and how it leads to increased access to information. The concept of autonomy and distantism will be analyzed to better understand how we can support DeafBlind individuals and communitites to thrive. Lastly, we will understand how to maintain access while also staying healthy and safe through the global pandemic.
Learning Objectives (Info, tools, and skills attendees will receive):

- Protactile language- link to seven principles (text and video) and current research

- CDC guidelines for when it is not possible to maintain social distance
